“If I am fortunate enough to see sevdaliza’s live performance, it will be an experience I will never forget in my life.” This is what my friend Jasmine said one year ago. Since the first time I listened to Sevdaliza’s masterpieces, I was deeply appealed by her concepts and avant-garde elements. Her contagious music, individual thinking angel and unique audiovisual sound works vividly describe a massive emotional world. Two weeks ago in Brixton O2, she brought her team to Raving Dahlia London tour. As what I imagined, the entire performance was beyond the expectation. The lightings, outfits, drumbeats, classical music all come together to form an audio -visual feast. Liam, the other friend along with me, watched the whole show and exclaimed: “My whole body’s pulse is shaking!” Under the heavily logical drumbeats and attractive electronic arrangements, she expressed her emotions for the love, pain, fear and even underlying turbulence. To Sevdaliza herself, she knows how to express herself as she can not chronically hide her own emotions and feelings she choose to speak them out by the medium of the arts. In hers music, listeners are able to feel an extremely powerful input through her husky vocal lines, tension electronic arrangements and heavy layers of orchestration courtesy of string. She and her co-producer keep experimenting in the choices of sounds to arrive at the effect that the total soundscape is acoustically tremendous and enveloping. The use of reverb and snapback, designs of elements seem give the reflection on her psychological instability and insecurity to herself in different phases. ISON is a modern-day trip hop album based on the mother to herself, her past lives. What impressed me is the music video of her track “Human”. She performs as a satyr and an erotic dancer inside a semi-abandoned large building with an only-men, wealthy audience sitting on a mezzanine. Her outfit seems symbolise that Debra Paget in the film “The Indian Tomb”(1959), which present her emotions on old Hollywood nostalgia as well as harsh criticism on the role of women offering catering to satisfy males’ sexual desire. The entire video story is full of complicated emotions and her thinkings on the marginal but worth-talk social topics.
